Things Miraheze should think about doing better

From Sterbal's Sundry Studies

In order to host wikis for organizations I encourage Miraheze to:

  • Establish guidelines and processes for backup, restore and recovery
  • Publish a terms of service and a privacy policy
  • Report on uptime for the past week, month, quarter and year
  • Determine the hard and soft costs for hosting wikis of various sizes
  • Give guidelines for how long it will take to make customizations of the interface (set up logos, alter other system parts of a wiki), add approved extensions and review new extensions
  • Allow each wiki to have its own configuration.

It would be nice if:

  • Miraheze could help find the appropriate place to host a wiki if Miraheze chooses not to host it
  • Miraheze could set up a budget based on different levels of donations
  • Miraheze could promote itself to users via email and social media in addition to on wiki methods and chat
  • There was more guidance on how to edit meta.
  • Miraheze could have a top 10 list of wikis posted to meta in various categories each week: Most Active, Most Changes, Most Images, Most Images added as well as a section listing the new wikis.

1. I will start working on these.

2. As you know we are working on this, they should be finished until the end of next month.

3. Uptime for the past week has been up except for 1 outage that lasted about 2/3 minutes. The rest should be worked on.

4. There is no extra cost for users, no matter the size of their wiki

5. Customizations of the interface and already installed extensions usually take less than 12 hours, in rare cases less than 24. Extension reviews can take 1-3 weeks (for now; this should of course be improved).

6. Budget will be discussed with Labster

7. We use email, staff at miraheze.org and I and the other staff members reply quickly to any emails there. We have Facebook and Twitter pages which are updated by Southparkfan and NDKilla.

8. For "allow each wiki to have it's own configuration" we are working on this. For progress you can check https://phabricator.miraheze.org/T194 .
